Old Bones - a blog about vertebrate paleontology

This is a place to share interesting stories about vertebrate paleontology, both from the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology as well as the wider scientific literature. We'll try and put these stories in a larger context of how they fit into the grand picture of the history of life on this planet. In addition we'll touch on broader issues of evolution, geology and science education.

Dinosaurs, Then and Now
Another guest post today from Allison L. Beck! A few weeks ago, a new species of theropod dinosaur (carnivores, like T. rex, that walked on two legs) was published in the journal Nature (1).  While that in and of itself is not particularly noteworthy, what is exciting is the fact that this therop...

A Call for Action
As paleontologists, the principles of evolution touch all the work we do.  Change through time - that's what we document with every fossil we find.  Geologic concepts of plate tectonics and geologic dating help us place our finds in a temporal context.  Biological concepts of adaptation, ecology, an...

A Meeting of Evolution and Development
It's been a while since I've written here, and for that I apologize.  A lot has happened in the meantime.  Even when you're studying animals that have been dead for millions of years new things are discovered all the time.  There is no better place to see that than at the annual meeting of the So...
